FFA team takes first at state
The South Heart FFA traveled to Crookston, Minn., during April to compete in the State FFA Horse Judging Contest. The team took first place and will be traveling to Indianapolis, Ind., this October to compete at nationals.
The team includes Madisen Jarrett, Taylor Downing, Natasha Baranko, Jocelyn Baranko, Paige Jung and Advisor Kaityn Swann
The horse judging contest consists of three parts. During the first portion of the contest, the FFA members judge a class of halter horses and rank them on the horse's overall balance, muscling and conformation.
They will then judge a riding class and be looking for a horse that moves with the most consistency and in the nicest manner. After students have judged the classes, they give a set of reasons to a judge, stating why they placed the class in the way they did.
The third and final portion of the contest is the horse knowledge test.
"These girls definitely deserved this award as they have put in the time and dedication to preparing for this contest it just goes to show that hard work pays off,” said advisor Kaitlyn Swann.
