Hecker receives community service award for making red crepe paper poppies
VALLEY CITY, N.D.—Leo Hecker was presented with the community service award on Saturday, June 2, from the Dacotah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Hecker was presented the award at Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, which is where he lives. He has made over 1 million red crepe paper poppies for the American Legion Auxiliary to commemorate Memorial Day. Hecker is one of only two people throughout the state that makes the poppies.
Each day, he spends time assembling parts of the poppy that are later delivered to the North Dakota Poppy Chairman Joab Buske in Oakes.
